2024 SEVIS by the Numbers is now available!

The 2024 SEVIS by the Numbers report, released by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) on June 5, 2025, offers a comprehensive overview of international student trends in the United States for the calendar year 2024. The report utilizes data from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), which tracks F-1 and M-1 students, as well as J-1 exchange visitors.

Key Highlights from the 2024 Report

  • Total Active F-1 and M-1 Student Records: 1,582,808, marking a 5.3% increase from 2023.

  • Top Countries of Origin:

    • India: 422,335 students, an 11.8% increase from 2023.

    • China: 329,541 students, a slight decrease of 0.25% from 2023. 

    • Regional Distribution: All four U.S. regions (West, Midwest, Northeast, South) experienced growth in foreign student records, with increases ranging from 3.0% to 8.5%.

  • SEVP-Certified Schools: 7,234 schools were certified to enroll international students in 2024, a decrease from 7,683 in 2023.

  • Practical Training Authorizations:

    • Optional Practical Training (OPT): 194,554 students authorized.

    • STEM OPT: 95,384 students authorized.

    • Curricular Practical Training (CPT): 130,586 students authorized. studyinthestates.dhs.gov

  • Top Employers for OPT and STEM OPT Participants:

    • Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Meta, and Apple were among the leading employers hiring international students under OPT and STEM OPT programs.
