U.S. will now impose much stricter social media vetting for visa applicants
U.S. will now impose much stricter social media vetting for visa applicants

What’s new?

  • Public social media check: The U.S. government will require applicants to set profiles to public so they can ensure there’s no hidden hostility toward U.S. values.

  • Full online review: Officers will also review search results and relevant databases for signs of extremism or political violence.

  • Faster processing for key students: Priority given to:

    • J‑1 medical exchange physicians

    • Students attending universities with less than 15% international enrollment

  • Streamlined rollout: These enhanced protocols are live globally across consulates—fully effective within five business days.

The U.S. government expressed that, by combining timely visa availability with smarter vetting, they will deliver both security and access.
